Jason is a three-time Grapplers Quest champion, NAGA champion, and a former Division I wrestler for West Virginia University. He began wrestling at age 7 and continued wrestling at the highest level through college. Jason was an assistant wrestling coach at Morgantown High School, and most recently was Director of Operations for Advantage MMA in Pennsauken, NJ. Jason currently is a strength and conditioning and wrestling coach as well as a career manager for the mixed martial arts fighters represented by The Brazen Sports Agency. A mixed martial arts fighter himself, through dedication to his rehabilitation program and to the strength and conditioning program he developed for himself, within six months of cervical spinal surgery, Jason competed in and won the 2009 Grapplers Quest U.S. Nationals of Grappling. Jason also is the first and only athlete ever to compete in mixed martial arts with a synthetic cervical disc. In addition, Jason has a background in secondary education and business, including specialties in engineering, cost estimating and energy analysis. Jason holds a B.A. in English from West Virginia University, and completed two years of post-graduate education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in secondary education while teaching reading and language arts to fifth graders at Gray Elementary School in Las Vegas, including teaching special needs students. Jason worked as a cost estimator and safety inspector for Wells Cargo Construction in Las Vegas while transitioning into the engineering field, and subsequently served as engineering support at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Maryland on the $1.25 B base relocation and closure program. Jason then came to Philadelphia to work as an energy analyst for Real Win Win, servicing clients such as Target, CVS, and JC Penney to analyze energy use, and develop and implement plans for reducing energy consumption and costs. In 2010, Jason returned to his core passion as Director of Operations at Advantage MMA, where he spearheaded dynamic growth of the MMA program, and trained and competed in mixed martial arts himself. Having lived and trained in Las Vegas for over five years, and now having brought his knowledge base to Philadelphia, Jason has developed both a keen eye for talent and relationships with top fighting promotions and some of the best trainers in mixed martial arts, including Tony Fryklund, Ken Hahn, and Fernando Bernardino. He has trained in some of the nation’s elite mixed martial arts facilities, including Extreme Couture, and Round 1 Boxing. Jason is also the founder of Sargus Strength Systems, where elite athletes take their conditioning, weight cutting, and rehydration to the next level for optimum competitive performance.
Boxing Coach / MMA Striking Coach
Walt was the 1979 South New Jersey Golden Gloves Champion in his weight class and has been a talented and engaging boxing coach for students of all levels, from novices to pros, with over three decades of boxing experience. Walt provides pure traditional boxing instruction and intensive boxing conditioning training, as well as skilled striking insights for our MMA fighters.
Walt also has real-world law enforcement experience, having attended the Philadelphia Police Academy and worked for the SEPTA Transit Police.
Walt is a crucial member of the Brazen Boxing & MMA competition team, and is a fixture at every fight supporting our amateur and professional fighters in the locker room and in their corners. With his decades of fight experience, unshakable calm, and confidence, Walt is a true ace in the hole for Brazen fighters.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Coach / Muay Thai Coach / Pro MMA Fighter
Tom is an undefeated professional MMA fighter (all wins thus far by submission), with 6 years of martial arts training in jiu jitsu, judo, and muay thai. Tom currently holds the rank of Brazilian jiu jitsu purple belt, and has five years of muay thai experience under Ken Perry, founder of Philadelphia Muay Thai, and intensive jiu jitsu training under Dustin “Clean” Denes.
At his largest hitting the scales over 300 lbs., Tom began his BJJ training with college friends in basements and living rooms, learning mostly through trial and error before beginning more formal training with Philadelphia Jiu Jitsu and began competing in grappling tournaments in 2007. After beginning amateur MMA competition in 2010, Tom accumulated an even record with a reputation of fighting tough opponents at higher weight classes while continuing to work full time in Information Technology and as a certified EMT.
In 2011, Tom joined the Brazen Boxing & MMA family and began training to compete as a professional MMA fighter in the 155 lb. weight class. Since turning pro under Brazen Head Coach Jason Sargus and living the Sargus Strength Systems program, Tom has earned a perfect record. Tom also is very engaging and skilled as a Brazilian jiu jitsu coach and muay thai coach, with a gift for breaking down moves understandably and intelligently for beginners through advanced students and modeling the grit and work ethic necessary to compete at the highest levels of MMA competition.
Women’s Boxing & Boxing Conditioning Coach
Jessica has been training in boxing for over thirteen years, having begun boxing in law school, and is the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Association novice 141 lb champion. Jessica also trains in submission grappling, muay thai, and Brazilian jiu jitsu, and at the age of 36 made her amateur MMA debut to earn a 1-0 record so far. A longtime fitness enthusiast who began instructing cardio fitness classes while an undergraduate student at Williams College, Jessica remains a competitive athlete who competes in sprint triathlons and road races.
Jessica is a practicing attorney who graduated as valedictorian of Skaneateles High School, graduated magna cum laude from Williams College, and received her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Jessica has been practicing law for the past ten years in Philadelphia at one of the city’s oldest law firms, where she has represented Fortune 100 clients, developed expertise in contract law, and honed her research and negotiating skills. Jessica’s professional experience, legal expertise, and research skills as well as her boxing and fitness instruction experience are formidable assets to Brazen Boxing & MMA, and to the fighters represented by The Brazen Sports Agency, where Jessica is CEO and Lead Agent. Due to her professional experience, legal expertise, and research skills as well as her understanding of the sports of boxing and MMA from the inside as a competitor and student, Jessica also specializes in performing due diligence research on fighters in the matchmaking and fight strategy development processes, as well as scouting new talent for the Agency.
Anthony Terrell Smith
Assistant Coach / MMA Coach / MMA Fighter
Anthony is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, graduado in capoeira, and is an incredibly athletic and powerful rising star who has competed as an amateur in MMA and boxing, and makes his professional MMA debut in April 2013. Anthony coaches our MMA fighters as well in his role as Assistant Coach with Head Coach Jason Sargus, and teaches a number of our boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and children’s classes.
Anthony has battled his way through some split decisions as an amateur, and after winning his final amateur fight decisively by rear naked choke in the second round, Anthony was awarded “Submission of the Night” honors by Combat Sports Insurance for his performance. With the momentum of this victory, Anthony eagerly looks to begin his professional MMA career this spring.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Coach / MMA Coach / MMA Fighter
Pat Sabatini is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and widely considered one of the best young grapplers in the country. Currently a D1 wrestler at Rider University, Pat has dominated in both grappling and Mixed Martial Arts on a multitude of levels. Pat currently boasts a 12-1 amateur MMA record and a Pan Am No-Gi Championship as a brown belt. He leads Brazen Boxing and MMA’s grapplers and MMA fighters as one of the youngest and most accomplished coaches in the country. Head Coach, Jason Sargus states, “In all my years of training and coaching I have not worked with a better young coach than Pat Sabatini. Quite frankly, he’s phenomenal.”
Shane Riccio brings a stellar wrestling pedigree with him to Brazen Boxing & MMA. Shane is a three-time Division I national qualifier for the Bucknell Bisons, and is among the all-time Top Five in wins for the Bucknell wrestling team with over 100 match wins during his college career. Shane’s mat awareness and athleticism, as well as his commitment as a serious student of wrestling, submission grappling, and wrestling for MMA, are an invaluable resource for our Brazen members.
We are lucky to count Matt among the many high caliber wrestling coaches at Brazen Boxing & MMA who make ours the strongest wrestling program of any MMA training center in Philadelphia. Matt began wrestling at the age of 5 and continued competing in the sport throughout college. In 2006, as the pinnacle of his competitive career, he earned the honor of becoming a NCAA Division III All-Americ
MMA Coach / Pro MMA Fighter
Further enriching our wrestling coaching roster, Evan “Kid Peligroso” Chmieleski is a professional MMA fighter who has earned a 4-4 record taking on the guys no one else wants to fight, and most recently earned the Locked in the Cage 135 lb. Championship belt.
Evan could be the poster boy for “tough as nails.” With his work ethic, never quit attitude and years of MMA training under Jeff Cobb and Pat Sabatini before joining the Brazen family, Evan has accumulated a wealth of practical MMA knowledge and is a huge asset both to the training and sparring room and to his students at Brazen.
Muay Thai Coach / Philadelphia Muay Thai Co-Founder
Brazen Boxing & MMA is honored to welcome Ken Perry to its coaching roster. Ken co-founded Philadelphia Muay Thai with Gerry Brown over 15 years ago, Philadelphia’s longest running Muay Thai club. Ken teaches traditional Muay Thai for competition, self defense and fitness. Ken has a level two certification from Ajarn Chai Sirisute and junior instructor certification under Sakasem. He has also trained in Las Vegas with Master Toddy and Master Luukchang. Ken’s instruction provides students with authentic Muay Thai training in the finest traditions of the sport.
Muay Thai & Striking Coach / Pro MMA Fighter
Paul is a promising professional MMA fighter who brings high level striking skills and impressive coaching talents to Brazen. No stranger to providing an exciting performance, winning his last amateur fight and all four of his pro MMA fights by KO or TKO, Paul also is a professional stage actor who regularly performs in the Philadelphia theater community, most recently in the critically acclaimed Hurlyburly with New City Stage Company at the Adrienne Theatre. Paul’s strong Muay Thai skills, combined with his training and sparring intensity, are a welcome addition to the Brazen Team, and are also why he continues to be invited to the Tapout Ranch in New Mexico to train with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia.
Children’s Karate Coach
Bobby comes to Brazen Boxing & MMA with a Black Belt in Chinese Goju and a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Along with his karate expertise, Bobby also is an accomplished wrestler and submission grappler. A certified personal trainer, Bobby also excels in strength and conditioning training for practitioners of martial arts.
